Asheville Citizen Times reporter Evan Gerike was honored in theĀ Super Bowl of sports journalism contestsĀ for work done in 2024.Gerike placed in the top 10 for high school beat writing in Division C by the Associated Press Sports Editors in its annual sports journalism contest.This is the first time APSE has had the category.Gerike earned the honor for his coverage of Western North Carolina high school football after Tropical Storm Helene devastated several areas in the region and how Rosman honored two football players who died in an ATV accident five days earlier at its game against North Henderson.The exact order of finish will be announced later.Ā Sports editors and journalists nationwide voted on the top 10 placements in various writing, website, print newspaper and photography categories.GIRLS BASKETBALL POWER RANKINGS: Avery County makes jump after upsetThe categories were split into four divisions based on newspaper circulation or digital readership size.
