Ex-NFL CB blasts Steelers’ plan to re-sign Justin Fields: ‘Crazy to me’

If the Pittsburgh Steelers ultimately re-sign Justin Fields, it will be the conclusion of a saga that will land back right where it was thought to from the start. Of course, the Steelers still have some burners in the stove, such as Russell Wilson and others.

Yet, not everyone fully understands why the Steelers want to re-sign Fields in the first place. Former NFL defensive back Jason McCourty believes the plan to bring Fields back ultimately makes ‘no sense’ whatsoever.

“It seems as though they’re going to stick with Justin Fields, which is crazy to me from the standpoint of Fields was your quarterback last year. You decide to go to Russell Wilson. it got ugly down the stretch,” McCourty said on Unsportsmanlike. “They never went back to Fields. You look at everything that happened, and they never went back to him.”

The Steelers’ scenario of bringing back Fields may not have happened in a long time in the NFL. He was soft-benched for Wilson upon his return and never started another game, but now the Steelers could turn to Fields as the option instead of Wilson.

That is a rare outcome in the NFL, and it might be why Fields is so apprehensive to sign onto any new deal that would have him return to the Steelers. All of that could push Fields to the open market, where some teams would like to sign him, even as the Steelers pursue Fields as their top option.
