Off-duty Worcester police officer faces assault charge after youth soccer game fight

Northborough police have charged a Worcester police officer with assault and battery in connection with a fight that broke out at a youth soccer game he attended while off-duty, Worcester police confirmed Sunday.

The officer — a 36-year-old West Boylston man — was the parent of one of the players, Northborough police said in a press release. He got into a fight with a coach for the opposing soccer team during a game at the Teamworks sports complex on March 1.

Northborough police said they would not identify the officer until he appears in Westborough District Court to face the charge, as he was issued a summons.

Per department policy, Worcester police have placed the officer on administrative leave while the incident is being investigated, a spokesperson for the department said.

A video of the incident shows the officer crossing the field at the indoor complex and confronting the coach, leading to a physical fight, WCVB reported.

No further information about the incident has been released.
