Spring sports roundup: Defending 7A baseball champ Bob Jones runs record to 11-4

Defending Class 7A state champion Bob Jones went 2-1 over the weekend, beating Thompson and Helena and suffering a shutout loss to Oxford. On Saturday, the Patriots topped Thompson 4-1 on the road and on Friday Bob Jones beat visiting Helena 10-0.

Oxford knocked off the 11-4 Patriots 6-0 in their second game on Saturday.

The Patriots scored all of their runs in the top of the third inning and gave up Thompson’s run in the bottom of the seventh on Saturday.

Thompson stranded 10 runners on base while Bob Jones left 8 on base.

Starter Joshua Wilhide earned the win for Bob Jones, allowing 3 hits over 4.2 scoreless innings. The junior struck out 4 and walked one. Mick Tyrrell gave up an earned run on a hit with a strikeout and a walk in 1.2 innings. Camden Martin had a strikeout and a walk in getting the final two outs.

Martin also had a double at the plate for one of Bob Jones’ 5 hits. Myles Hammonds was 2-for-4 and Zack Johnson went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Dill Adkins went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Ashton Blair took the loss for Thompson, allowing 1 earned run on 4 hits with a strikeout and 4 walks in 7 innings.

Austin Barnett, Anderson Harris, Joshua Tuttle and Gabriel Romero had hits for the Warriors and Wyatt Williams drove in a run.

On Friday, Bob Jones blanked visiting Helena 10-0 as Tanner Hermesch and Reece Brazeal combined to pitch a 1-hitter.

Starter Hermesch worked 4.1 innings, allowing a hit with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks. Brazeal struck out one of the two hitters he faced.

Vincent Howald went 2-for-3 with a home run and 3 RBIs. Robert Chatmon II had a double in 3 at-bats with 2 RBIs. Johnson was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs with Hermesch, Mason Rinehart and Martin also driving in a run each.

Leadoff hitter Brett Cannon got Helena’s lone hit. Trey Lampman took the loss, allowing 6 earned runs on 7 hits with 2 strikeouts and a walk. Justin Mullenix worked 1.1 innings in relief, giving up 4 runs – 3 earned – on 4 hits.

Oxford 6, Bob Jones 0

The Yellow Jackets shut out Bob Jones on Saturday, as Gavin Griner pitched a complete-game 2-hitter. The senior walked 2 and had a strikeout in the win.

Oxford (12-6) banged out 7 hits, with Marcus Lawler going 2-for-3 at designated hitter and left fielder Zakaree Newton going 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Nick Richardson, Bryson Bradford and Reid Maniscalco also had hits. Bradford, Maniscalco, Hudson Gilman and Canaan Whitman also drove in a run apiece.

Tanner Hermesch went 2-for-2 for Bob Jones with a double.

Starter Jackson Shaw took the loss, allowing 3 earned runs on 6 hits with 2 strikeouts and a walk. Adkins worked an inning, allowing 2 earned runs on no hits, with 3 walks and a strikeout. Nicholas Koukos pitched the final inning, giving up an earned run on 1 hit with a walk.

James Clemens 8, Brentwood (Tenn.) 2

The Jets wrapped up a perfect weekend at Independence High School in Thompson’s Station, Tenn., to win the Jim Painter Tournament, beating Brentwood, Tenn., for a two-game Saturday sweep. Earlier in the day, James Clemens topped Nolensville 6-4.

Against Brentwood, junior Matthew Drinkwater pitched a 1-hitter, allowing no earned run with 6 strikeouts. Brooks Rhodes went 2-for-2 with a run scored and a stolen base for the winners.

The Jets jumped to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first and pushed it to 8-0 after three.

Hayden Udovich went 2-for-5 with 3 RBIs, Drinkwater was 1-for-3 with an RBI, Jesse Isensee was 1-for-4 with an RBI, Hudson Smith was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Bryson Hodge was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

In the win over Nolensville, Udovich was 2-for-2 with a double and 2 runs scored, an RBI and 3 stolen bases. Isensee and Trip Morgan were both 2-for-4 with Morgan, who had a double, driving in a pair of runs. Devier Ramos went 2-for-3 in the win. Drinkwater also had a double.

Starter Tyler Lewis earned the win, allowing 1 earned run on 3 hits with 4 strikeouts and a walk over 3.1 innings. Will Congo worked 2 innings, allowing 3 unearned runs on 2 hits with 2 strikeouts and 3 walks. Zac Mann held the Knights scoreless over the final 1.2 innings, allowing 2 hits with a strikeout and a walk.

The Jets opened the tournament on Friday with a 4-1 win over Summit, Tenn., and a 5-3 win over host Independence.

Mann went 2-for-3 at the plate against Summit and Congo was 1-for-3 with a home run. Sophomore Evan York got the win, allowing a run on 2 hits with 4 strikeouts over 4 innings.

Against Independence, Morgan was 2-for-3 with a homer and 2 runs scored. Senior Scott Sieja struck out 11, allowing 2 earned runs in 6.1 innings.

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

Satsuma 5-11, Davidson 3-1

The Gators swept a Saturday doubleheader at Davidson as Satsuma improved to 9-2 on the season. The Gators have scored 100 runs thus far and have scored at least 10 runs in six of their wins.

In Game 1, Micah Sullivan ripped a 2-run double in the top of the fourth inning to break a 2-2 tie. Satsuma had opened the inning with back-to-back singles by Tucker Hicks and Jake May, who had 2 hits on the day.

Cooper Crenshaw smacked a 2-run home run in the first inning, recording his team-best 14th RBI.

Davidson got a pair of runs in the second inning with Gus Jones and Trent Hughes getting RBIs. Micah Spivey had a double.

Senior Hunter Sullivan got the win, allowing 5 hits with 4 strikeouts and a walk. Charlie Brinkman got the final 3 outs to pick up the save.

In Game 2, Satsuma took advantage of 9 walks and scored 11 runs on 4 hits. The Gators used an 8-run third inning to pull away – using 5 consecutive walks and a single.

Davidson starter Drake Williams gave up 11 runs with 6 walks in 2.2 innings.

Satsuma leadoff hitter Braxton Byrd reached base three times, with a pair of walks and a single, scoring twice for the Gators. KJ Austin and Tucker Hicks each scored a pair of runs for Satsuma.

Freshman starter Grant McElroy pitched 2 innings and got the win for the Gators. Byrd and Brady Coleman worked in relief and held the Warriors to 4 hits.

Alma Bryant 1, Saraland 0

Connor English threw a complete-game shutout as the Hurricanes beat Saraland at home on Saturday. The senior gave up 3 hits with 7 strikeouts, allowing just 2 runners to reach third base on the day.

Landon Adams’ drove in Caden Goodin with a sacrifice fly for Alma Bryant’s only run. Goodin had led off the bottom of the second inning with a single, took third on a double by Jackson Fulton and scored on Adams’ fly to left.

Alex Ramos had two hits for Bryant as the Hurricanes improved to 6-7 on the season.

Saraland threatened in the sixth when Fuller Chisolm, who had a pair of hits for the Spartans, and Hudson Robbins singled and Chisolm took third on a bunt. He was caught trying to steal home to end the threat.

Gabe Turner pitched 6 innings for Saraland (9-4), striking out 5.

Saraland 9, Mobile Christian 3

The Spartans beat Mobile Christian at home on Friday to improve to 9-4 on the season.

Christian Rice struck out 3 on the way to a complete-game win. Hudson Robbins smacked a 2-run home run, Fuller Chisholm had a pair of hits and 2 RBIs and Jacob Rowell had a hit and an RBI. Santae McWilliams and Collin Smith also had a hit with an RBI each.

BIRMINGHAM

Hueytown 8, Grissom 6 (8)

The Golden Gophers pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning to edge Grissom on the road on Saturday. Hueytown senior Sam Vaughan threw out the runner that would have been the winning run for the Tigers at the plate in the bottom of the seventh after a base hit to left field.

Noah Syx drove in the winning runs with a base hit to center field in the eighth. Syx finished the day with 3 RBIs with the single and a sacrifice. Caleb Chapman went 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored for Hueytown. Vaughan, Bronson Moore, Jose Irreaza and Rodrequis Houston also had hits in the win.

Moore earned the win with 2 innings in relief of Vaughan. Moore allowed 1 earned run on 2 hits with a pair of walks. Vaughan gave up 5 runs – none earned – on 4 hits with 6 walks and 2 strikeouts.

Garrett Blacklock took the loss for Grissom, allowing 2 earned runs on 3 hits with a strikeout in 2 innings in relief of Griffin Grigsby, who worked 1 inning allowing a run on 2 hits. Charlie Cassingham worked 5 innings as the starter, allowing 5 runs – 3 earned – on 2 hits with 7 strikeouts and 5 walks.

Blacklock doubled and had 2 RBIs. Cassingham went 5-for-5 for the rest of Grissom’s hits on the day. He also had an RBI and a run scored for the Tigers.

STATEWIDE

Montgomery 11, Brewbaker Tech 1

The Eagles walked away with their second straight 5-inning mercy rule win with Saturday’s rout at Brewbaker Tech. On Friday, Montgomery Academy beat Highland Home 13-0, also on the road.

Reid McBride gave up 1 hit with 4 strikeouts to earn the win with 4 innings work. Andrew Hosein allowed a run on 1 hit with a strikeout in the fifth inning.

McBride helped his cause by going 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. John Allen Jones, Nathan Applegate, Vincent Desautels and Hosein all finished with 2 RBIs on the day. Chapman Baker also had a hit and William Marks and Paxton Haigler also had an RBI each.

In Friday’s win, freshman Desautels earned the win with a complete game 2-hitter. He struck out 8 and had one of the Eagles’ 7 hits on the day.

Applegate went 1-for-3 with 3 RBIs in the win. Hagler had a hit and 2 RBIs. Marks, McBride and Jones all contributed a hit with an RBI. Baker also had a hit and Graham Martin had an RBI.

Montgomery Academy improved to 8-1 on the season and will play at Montgomery Catholic on Monday at 2 p.m.

BIRMINGHAM

Hoover 3, Vestavia Hills 1

The Bucs got a pair of goals from Patrick Anderson on the way to the Class 7A, Area 6 contest at home on Thursday. Henry Patterson assisted on both of Anderson’s goals.

Hadi Saad also scored for Hoover. Sawyer Houlditch and Matthew Daibes split time in goal for the Bucs, with Houlditch allowing the Rebels’ goal.

SOFTBALL

STATEWIDE

Prattville Christian 6, Auburn 5

The Panthers bounced back after a pair of losses on Friday to sweep two in their PCA Tournament on Saturday. Prattville Christian edged Auburn and beat Scottsboro 6-2 in its final two games on Saturday.

On Friday, Scottsboro beat the Panthers 2-1 and Brewbaker Tech slammed PCA 11-2.

In the win over Auburn, Peyton Thrash was 2-for-3 with a 3-run home run to give PCA (16-3) the lead. Sarah Payton Schmidt also had an RBI single. Alivia Messick struck out 6 and picked up the win the in circle.

In the win over Scottsboro, Saniyah Weaver went 3-for-4 with a 2-run home run. Addie Byrd was 3-for-3. Laura Beth NeSmith struck out 7 on the way to the win.

Messick took the loss against Scottsboro on Friday despite striking out 8 Wildcats on the day. Peyton Thrash went 2-for-3 at the plate.

NeSmith was saddled with the loss to Brewbaker Tech as PCA made 8 errors on the day and finished with 5 hits.

STATEWIDE

Demopolis 6, BTW-Montgomery 0

The Tigers blanked Booker T. Washington on the road in Montgomery on Friday with senior Libby Emory notching her first hat trick of the season.

Senior Ana Dominguez scored twice and junior Payton Mays scored for Demopolis.

Senior keeper Sophie Harrison had 10 saves to earn her fifth clean sheet of the season.

Demopolis improved to 7-4 on the season and will play at Class 5A, Area 5 foe Marbury on Tuesday.
