A big legal decision was just made in court that significantly impacts the day-to-day life of Taylor Swift’s godson, Leo Thames Newman. People reported on March 17 that Jaime King’s ex-husband, Kyle Newman, received sole physical custody of Leo, Swift’s godson, and the former couple’s other son, James.
People reviewed the legal documents regarding the judge’s decision. Legal custody of James, 11, and Leo, 9, will be shared by King and Newman. However, Newman will have “tie-breaking authority” as needed in legal matters.
In addition, Newman received sole physical custody of both boys according to People. The judge ordered visitation rights for King. She can see the boys three times a week, but the visits will be supervised. The visits will be in “specific hour blocks,” reported People.
People also reported that according to an addendum to the court decision, King’s restricted access to her sons came as a result of stipulations she previously received but did not complete.
According to People, King was supposed to complete a 6-month drug and alcohol rehabilitation program, which has not been done. In addition, King was required to complete a 26-week parenting course, do weekly testing, and obtain weekly therapy sessions to “address case issues.”
Another requirement, People reported, was to do counseling sessions with her sons once their therapist determined it was appropriate.
Newman and King wed in 2007 and she filed for divorce in 2020. People noted that since the couple’s split, there have been multiple allegations of drug or alcohol problems with King, and repeated battles over custody of the two young boys.

When Leo was a baby, King explained her decision to name Swift her baby’s godmother. She told People, It wasn’t because it was this person and the name. It was really because of her morals and her values, the way that she treats people and how hard-working she is.”
King added, “That’s the kind of person I want to be the guide and the spiritual protector of my child.”
