Cubs make more roster cuts, sending prospect Pablo Aliendo to minors | Marquee Sports Network

The Cubs made another roster move on Sunday to trim their spring training numbers. The team returned catcher Pablo Aliendo to minor league camp, the Cubs announced on Sunday morning. The move reduces their roster from 54 to 53 players. It’s the Cubs second straight day of roster reductions.Aliendo, 23, appeared in 5 games this spring for the Cubs, going 1-for-9. Last season, the Venezuelan backstop played in 58 games for Double-A Tennessee, slashing .249/.346/.462 (.808 OPS) with 10 home runs and 33 RBI.[MORE: Javier Assad sidelined for start of Cubs’ season]He was a longshot to crack the Opening Day roster but having him in big league camp in spring had a couple of benefits. Like every team in spring, the Cubs like to carry plenty of backstop depth. The position is grueling, and injuries can occur at any time, so you want to make sure you’re covered in that regards. There’s also a lot of pitchers in camp, so you want to have plenty catchers to work with them. For Aliendo, being in big-league camp allowed him to work with the major-league coaching staff, spend time around the veteran backstops and familiarize himself with pitchers he may work with in the minors in 2025.[WATCH: Walk around Sloan Park with Taylor McGregor]The Cubs have five catchers still in camp — Miguel Amaya and Carson Kelly, who are expected to be the tandem when the season begins, prospect Moisés Ballesteros and veterans Reese McGuire and Carlos Pérez, who are signed on minor-league deals with invites to big-league spring training. The Cubs can take 31 players to Japan for the Tokyo Series in a little over two weeks, but will only have a normal, 26-man active roster for the two games against Los Angeles. Of those five extra roster spots, one is expected to be a backstop (again, because of the demands of the position).
