Mayor Evans honors local student for international art competition win

Rochester, N.Y. — Mayor Malik D. Evans, alongside officials and educators from the Rochester City School District, celebrated Zahara Farady, a 10-year-old student from Abelard Reynolds School #42, for her achievement in the Mayors for Peace Children’s Art Competition.

Zahara received a Special Prize certificate from Kazumi Matsui, the Mayor of Hiroshima, Japan, and president of Mayors for Peace.

Zahara described her artwork, saying, “It means the little girl is swinging in a tree, and there’s sun. She’s at peace.”

Dr. Deborah Washington, principal of School No. 42, expressed pride in Zahra’s accomplishment. “To see hard work students put in, to hear they’re chosen for such an honor, she has put us on the map internationally,” said Washington.

Zahara’s artwork is also displayed at the United Nations.
