SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Jennifer Stolo’s movie “No Address” is already in theatres after being filmed in Sacramento and Placer County.
Its opening weekend for the project was about two and a half years in the making.
“It’s very exciting to see how you can utilize the power of storytelling through film,” said Jennifer Stolo, who is the CEO and producer of Robert Craig Films, which is based in Rocklin.
ABC10 caught up with her earlier on Sunday as she prepared to watch the Oscars. Her company produced the film “No Address” with its storylines about the homeless crisis based on true events.
“It’s really an inspiring, uplifting story that really focuses on a group of individuals that fall into homelessness and their struggles and the bleak realities of that situation — but also the hope and the redemption,” Stolo said.
The movie was shot in Sacramento and Placer County, making it the first Placer County production company to release a full-length feature film nationwide in movie theatres.
Stolo described Sacramento as becoming secondary to LA and San Francisco in the state, where so many films are done.
“To see other movies that we’ve recently seen Leo DiCaprio filmed, his BC project that has its name coming out in August, to be able to see ‘Sacramento,’ a local indie film that comes out on a one-night theatrical release in April, you’re just seeing so many more filmmakers coming here,” Stolo said.
She said Sacramento has so much to offer to filmmakers. Among those is the hospitality of business owners and the easy access to permits.
“We were able to ingest $3 million back into the economy from filming our movie ‘No Address,’ and that was really all-around local businesses. I mean it was around equipment rentals, it was around the cast and the crew and the talent because you have this emerging high level of talent that’s here in this community, and I love seeing that,” Stolo said.
As other filmmakers eye Sacramento and its surroundings, she sees it becoming an emerging creative location for filmmakers.
“It has the topography, it has the culture, it has historic downtowns, all over the region. It has just that perfect feel of all different ways that you can have any type of film here,” Stolo said.
Stolo said they plan to give back 50% of the net profits from “No Address” back to organizations addressing homelessness. She added they’ll continue to give back to other causes with her film company. She’s hoping it can become a model for other film companies.
