The Downtown South Bend 2045 plan could relocate the South Bend Museum of Art to make way for a riverfront park, affecting its current space in the Century Center.

Executive Director Lisa Shaffer says moving would present challenges due to the museum’s specialized space, including over 35,000 square feet and tall ceilings designed for art.

She also emphasizes the museum’s role in supporting local schools, serving over 1,600 fifth graders, and drawing visitors to downtown.

While she supports the city’s revitalization plans, Shaffer believes the museum can continue contributing in its current location.
