The Athletic has live coverage of the 2025 NHL trade deadline.
BRANDON, Fla. — The Boston Bruins traded Charlie Coyle to the Colorado Avalanche on Friday afternoon ahead of the NHL deadline, according to league sources.
The Bruins are receiving center Casey Mittelstadt, prospect William Zellers and a 2025 second-round draft pick in the deal. They are sending a fifth-round pick in 2026 to the Avalanche.
Coyle learned of the trade after the Bruins’ 1 p.m. practice at TGH Ice Plex. He had partial no-trade protection. Colorado was not on his list. The multi-position forward is signed through 2026 at $5.25 million annually.
The right-shot 33-year-old started the season as the team’s No. 2 center. He most recently played No. 2 right wing. He has 15 goals and seven assists.
The Avalanche previously traded star forward Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes in a late January blockbuster, leading to trade rumors surrounding Mittelstadt as the team looked to upgrade its top six. On Thursday evening to that end, they acquired New York Islanders center Brock Nelson.
Mittelstadt, 26, was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres with the No. 8 pick in the 2017 NHL Draft. Following a career-high 59-point season with the Sabres in 2022-23, Buffalo dealt Mittelstadt for defenseman Bowen Byram in a one-for-one deal with Colorado at last year’s trade deadline.
