Cardinal Newman boys, girls among 1st-round winners in NorCal soccer playoffs

The Maria Carrillo and Petaluma girls teams also advanced to Thursday’s second round.

Boys

Division II

No. 5 Cardinal Newman 1. No. 4 Woodcreek 0

The Cardinals (14-3-3) scored only one goal, but it was all they needed to upset Woodcreek in Tuesday’s NorCal playoff opener.

With the game scoreless midway through the second half, Newman’s Lucas Flores played a pass down the right side to teammate Angel Caballero in space. Caballero then whipped a cross across the goal to a waiting Jacob Patterson, who had made a run down the left side. Patterson scored and gave Newman the only advantage the Cardinals would need. Devon Taylor made a crucial save in goal to preserve the shutout.

Newman will now travel to Turlock to take on top-seeded Pitman (19-4-2) at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Girls

Division II

No. 4 Cardinal Newman 4, No. 5 Twelve Bridges 1

Newman (12-10-1) went up 3-0 at halftime and never looked back in cruising to the opening NorCal win.

Newman’s Jayne Phillips scored both the first and fourth goals for a brace on the evening. Nathali Mendoza and Bella D’Amico scored the Cardinals’ other two goals, while Isabel Rendino and Siena Roy were credited with an assist apiece.

The Cardinals will now travel to top-seeded Granite Bay (9-8-3) for Thursday’s 5 p.m. game.

Division III

No. 4 Maria Carrillo 2, No. 5 Pleasant Valley 0

The Pumas (11-8-3) scored both goals in the first half to beat the Vikings in their NorCal playoff opener Tuesday in Santa Rosa.

Kalli Cho continued her stellar season by scoring both goals. She opened the scoring on a long pass from Ashley Ngo in the 28th minute before doubling the Pumas’ lead just before halftime on a penalty kick.

Carrillo will now head to Atherton to play The Menlo School (17-4-3), the division’s top seed. That game is set for 3 p.m. Thursday.

No. 1 Menlo School 1, No. 8 Sonoma Academy 0

The Coyotes, who were dealt perhaps the toughest draw in the first round, battled but couldn’t find the equalizer as they lost to Menlo School.

The Knights took the lead four minutes into the second half on a goal by freshman Everleigh Porter.

Sonoma Academy ends its season with a 14-4-3 overall record and a perfect mark in NCL I league play.

Division IV

No. 4 Petaluma 2, No. 5 Winters 0

The Trojans (14-7-3) scored in the 10th and 36th minutes as they shut out Winters in Tuesday’s NorCal opener.

Petaluma got goals from Grace Forney and Chloe Bulwa, while a combined effort in goal by Gabriela Mendoza and Kaitlyn Kensinger contributed to the shutout victory. Kensinger made three saves.

Up next for the Trojans is a trip to top-seeded Fresno Christian (18-2) for Thursday’s 3 p.m. game.

No. 3 Sacred Heart Prep 5, No. 6 Sonoma Valley 0

The Dragons’ magical season came to an end Tuesday in the first round of the NorCal playoffs.

SHP took a quick 2-0 lead before opening the game up with three more goals, a deficit that was too much for the Dragons to overcome.

Sonoma Valley ends its season with a 10-9-5 overall record, which including a NCS championship. The Dragons finished third in the Vine Valley Athletic League with a 6-3-3 mark.
