The Cardinals saw their season end just one win shy of a Division II title.
The Cardinal Newman boys soccer team saw its season end just one win shy of a Northern California Division II title, falling to Mountain View 2-1 on Saturday evening.
The Cardinals found themselves down 1-0 in the 25th minute in Los Altos and that remained the score at the half.
Coming out of the break, the red and gold seemed far more composed and eventually delivered the equalizer. Devon Carranza was in a one-on-one battle down the wing, but was able to make a move that freed up some space and fired a shot into the far post for a goal.
Newman kept the pressure on, constantly in the Spartans’ half. The hosts then hit a long pass that slipped its way past the Cardinals’ defense for a breakaway goal that put Mountain View back up, 2-1.
The score held the rest of the way despite Newman continuing its aggressive approach.
The Cardinals end their season with a 15-4-3 overall record, which includes the North Bay League Oak division title at 8-1-1.
