CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Guardians will be without Erik Sabrowski after the left-handed reliever received an anti-inflammatory injection in his surgically repaired elbow this week.
Sabrowski, whose journey to the big leagues included missing a pair of seasons while rehabbing from two separate Tommy John surgeries, likely will not be ready to break camp with the club, following his sensational rookie debut late last year.
After complaining of tightness in his elbow and forearm, Sabrowski was examined Thursday by Dr. Keith Meister for a second opinion in Surprise, Arizona, the club said.
Meister recommended the injection, followed by a short period of rest. Sabrowski will be re-examined next week and could begin a throwing program at that time.
The Guardians will announce a more definitive timeframe for Sabrowski’s return to the mound in the next few days.
Selected by Cleveland in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 Draft from San Diego in December 2021, Sabrowski made his big league debut Sept. 4 and pitched effectively enough down the stretch that he made Cleveland’s postseason roster.
The Canada native, 27, struck out 19 and picked up one save in 12 2/3 scoreless innings over eight regular season appearances. Sabrowski appeared five times in the playoffs, allowing one earned run and striking out eight in 5 1/3 innings.
