How Patriots Feel About Potential Davante Adams Pursuit

The Patriots badly need to improve their wideout group, and another highly accomplished receiver became available to New England on Tuesday.

The Jets released Davante Adams just over a week before the official start of the new NFL year. New York traded for Adams last October in an all-in move to satisfy Aaron Rodgers, but with the Jets moving on from the future Hall of Fame quarterback, they also felt inclined to cut bait with the high-priced pass-catcher.

Some probably considered New England as a potential landing spot for Adams after he was released. On top of the Patriots’ need for help at skill positions, Adams has a connection with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels from their time together with the Las Vegas Raiders. But as of Tuesday, New England had not shown any interest in acquiring Adams, per MassLive’s Karen Guregian.

The reported lack of interest might be mutual. As Guregian pointed out, there’s a belief around the league that Adams will take his talents wherever Rodgers does. NFL Network also reported the Palo Alto native who played collegiately at Fresno State prefers to play on the West Coast.

If the Patriots simply were one productive receiver away from being a Super Bowl contender, Adams might make sense for Mike Vrabel’s group. But with so many holes to fill and so much work to be done in Foxboro, Mass., the Patriots likely will look elsewhere as they try to bolster Drake Maye’s supporting cast.
