The Athletic has live coverage of theĀ 2025 NHL trade deadline.
Brock Nelson is expected to be traded by the New York Islanders before Fridayās deadline, a league source told The Athletic on Thursday night.
Islanders general manager and president of hockey operations Lou Lamoriello made his last pitch on a contract extension Thursday for the 33-year-old Nelson, who ranks fourth in franchise history with 901 games played and fifth with 295 goals. Nelson declined, and the eventual outcome will almost certainly be a trade. As many as seven teams are reportedly vying to acquire him. He ranks No. 2 on The Athleticās most recent NHL trade board.
The Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, New Jersey Devils, Winnipeg Jets, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vegas Golden Knights and Minnesota Wild have all circled on Nelson to varying degrees, with the likely return being a first-round pick and a highly regarded prospect.
Lamoriello valued Nelson enough to try to keep him an Islander for life, but the value in a trade should help the Islanders in the near term.
Kyle Palmieri is also a pending unrestricted free agent. Another league source said no decision had been made on whether to move Palmieri, who like Nelson scored his 20th goal on Tuesday, ahead of the deadline.
