The ‘crazy stat’ that Sam Querrey has found out about Felix Auger-Aliassime after his loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final in Dubai

Felix Auger-Aliassime is starting to catch some attention after making an impressive start to the 2025 season.

Auger-Aliassime has won two titles already in 2025, and most recently reached the final of the Dubai Tennis Championships.

On this occasion, Auger-Aliassime was beaten by Stefanos Tsitsipas, but has still been able to make progress in his climb up the ATP rankings.

Auger-Aliassime admitted he had an advantage heading into the 2025 season, and former world number 11 Sam Querrey has pointed out another fortunate thing that keeps happening to the Canadian.

Sam Querrey discovers ‘crazy stat’ about Felix Auger-Aliassime

While Auger-Aliassime has impressed with his performances on court, Querrey has noticed that the world number 18 has received some good fortune through injuries and illness to his opponents.

This was particularly relevant in Auger-Aliassime’s run to the Madrid Masters final last year, where only four of his seven matches were completed.

More recently, Auger-Aliassime benefitted from Daniil Medvedev feeling unwell, as he progressed to the Qatar Open semi-finals.

Match Outcome Ranking Points Gained Prize Money Gained
Vs Jakub Mensik (Madrid 2024 – R32) Second Set Retirement +50 +€36,775
Vs Jannik Sinner (Madrid 2024 -QF) Walkover +200 +122,595
Vs Jiri Lehecka (Madrid 2024 -SF) First Set Retirement +250 +227,670
Vs Hamad Medjedovic (Doha 2025 – R16) Walkover +50 +$35,250
Vs Daniil Medvedev (Doha 2025 -QF) Retirement after first set +100 +$72,390

Querrey calculated that Auger-Aliassime had gained a total of $510,000 in prize money and 650 ranking points through these retirements and walkovers, with the American speaking on the Nothing Major podcast about how he would change the rules.

“I have a crazy stat. In the final he [Tsitsipas played Felix]. At Madrid last year, Felix got three walkovers or retirements,” said Querrey. “In Doha last week he got two retirements. From those combined tournaments, he received $510,000 and 650 ATP points. In retirements and walkovers in two events. That’s crazy.

“And I’m going if he was in the quarters and got 200 points or was in the semis and got 400, I would give him 200 points, I’m not giving him 400! But I did the math correctly and he was awarded 650 ATP points and a half a million dollars in walkovers and retirements in two events.

“He is really good, not saying that he wouldn’t be where he is without that, but those are crazy numbers.”

While he benefited from retirements and walkovers in these two events, Auger-Aliassime has not had any others since the start of 2024.

In-fact, Auger-Aliassime has had to retire in two tournaments of his own, having done so at the Rotterdam Open last month.

Could Felix Auger-Aliassime be in contention for the ATP Finals in 2025?

With Auger-Aliassime already reaching three finals so far this year, he has put himself in a strong position in he race to the ATP Finals.

The 24-year-old currently sits in third place, with Auger-Aliassime ahead of Carlos Alcaraz and only behind Australian Open finalists Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev.

If he was able to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin, it would be Auger-Aliassime’s second appearance at the year-end tournament.

Auger-Aliassime beat Rafael Nadal in the round-robin stage at the 2021 ATP Finals, but was unable to advance from the group.
