A man facing assault charges following an altercation at a children’s soccer game in Northborough is a Worcester police officer.
The man, a 36-year-old West Boylston resident who police have not named, is facing an internal police investigation, police spokesman Lt. Sean Murtha confirmed, and has been placed on paid leave.
Northborough police, in a press release Friday, said they had summonsed a man to court after being called to the Teamworks recreation center at 185 Otis St. around 6 p.m. March 1 for a fight on a field.
They said an investigation including review of video, showed an altercation occurred between the parent of a child who was playing and a coach of an opposing team, and issued a summons to the parent from West Boylston for assault and battery.
Northborough police did not name the man or state his profession, saying the department does not identify people it has summonsed to appear in court.
“The individual being charged will be identified once he is arraigned in Westborough District Court,” it wrote.
