Yankees’ Gerrit Cole to get diagnostic testing on elbow: Source

New York Yankees starter Gerrit Cole will undergo diagnostic testing on his right elbow, according to a league source.

Cole was shut down with pain in his right elbow following his first start last spring training. Tests at the time revealed he was dealing with inflammation and edema. He then was placed on the 60-day injured list and didn’t pitch in a big-league game until June 19.

Cole ended up making 19 regular-season starts, going 8-5 with a 3.41 ERA, and he made five starts in the postseason, helping the Yankees to their first World Series since 2009.

In the offseason, Cole opted out of the four years and $144 million remaining on his contract, only for the Yankees to tell him they wouldn’t add an extra year at $36 million to the deal. Cole and the Yankees then decided to remain together on the initial deal.

Cole pitched over 200 innings in 2022 and 2023 when he won the American League Cy Young Award. He has surpassed the 200-inning mark six times in his 12-year career.
