Sony has surprised gamers by releasing a brand-new system software update for the PlayStation 3. The update brings the nearly nineteen-year-old console to version 4.92 and improves system performance while also renewing the PlayStation 3’s Blu-ray player encryption key, which is a vital component that ensures players can continue to use the console’s disc drive for games and movies.
While the latest software update doesn’t exactly make any exciting improvements to the console, it is an important one that all players should download and install if they want to continue using any sort of discs. While the company’s latest consoles, the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, also have a Blu-ray player, they do not need to receive system updates to renew their encryption keys. But, with that being said, both the PS4 and PS5 still receive new updates regularly. Sony recently announced that it was testing a new firmware patch for the PS5, which will include some minor improvements, such as easier activity viewing, Unicode 16.0 emojis, and various system performance enhancements.
