Emma Navarro has just done something only five women in history have after taking the Merida Open title

Emma Navarro has added to her growing resume after winning the biggest title of her career in Merida.Navarro had already beat the defending champion en route to the Merida Open final, as she appeared to have quickly moved on from her disappointing Middle Eastern swing. The American was the top seed in Merida, while the second top ranked player Paula Badosa had to retire due to injury.Badosa has since updated fans on this injury, as she looks to recover in time for Indian Wells where she is a former champion. With the Spaniard no longer in the tournament, Navarro certainly took advantage of the weakened field in Merida.Photo by Daniel Pockett/Getty ImagesEmma Navarro wins Merida Open final with a double bagel victoryNavarro was playing against qualifier Emiliano Arango in the final, having won their only previous meeting two years ago. This was both players first time in a final at WTA 500 level, and Navarro cruised to victory having won the match without dropping a single game.Arango only won 21 points in this match, with Navarro winning the biggest title of her career in just 55 minutes. The last time that this happened in a WTA final was in 2021, when Iga Swiatek beat Karolina Pliskova, 6-0 6-0, in the Italian Open final. With her ‘double bagel’ win, Emma Navarro is only the fifth woman since 2000 to have achieved this in a WTA Final. The other women to have achieved this in the 21st century are the aforementioned Swiatek, Simona Halep, Agnieszka Radwanska and Marion Bartoli. How has Emma Navarro’s ranking been impacted by her Merida Open victory?Prior to the tournament in Mexico, Navarro was ranked at world number 10 and has now made an upward movement.Navarro did not lose a single set in Merida and is now back at her previous career-high of world number eight, that she first achieved in September last year.Merida Open 2025ResultFirst RoundReceived a bye as the top seedSecond RoundBeat Petra Martic, 6-1 6-2Quarter-finalBeat Zeynep Sönmez, 6-4 6-2Semi-finalBeat Elina Avanesyan, 6-3 6-3FinalBeat Emiliano Arango (Q), 6-0 6-0 Navarro will now head to California for Indian Wells, where she reached the quarter-finals last year after beating Aryna Sabalenka.Indian Wells has made a significant change for 2025, changing something that has been the same for the past 25 years.
