Bullish Kris Boyd has written off Manchester United’s hopes of claiming the Europa League – joking that Rangers are already in line for the trophy.

Amid a disappointing campaign, European nights have given the Ibrox faithful plenty of memorable moments – the latest coming on Thursday as interim boss Barry Ferguson led his side to an impressive 3-1 victory over Fenerbahce in Istanbul. They will do it all again in Glasgow this week with Jose Mourinho insisting there was still life in the tie – but tongue-in-cheek Boyd appeared to hint that he felt the full competition could be done and dusted before Rangers even reach the quarter-finals.

Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday host Simon Thomas opened the door to it being a “need” for United to win the Europa League – and reach the Champions League through the back door. Boyd quickly wrote off their changes, chiming in: “Rangers have won that.”

Boyd was then pressed on what he felt the key issues were at Old Trafford under boss Ruben Amorin. He went on: “There is just something wrong with the full football club. Every single story is negative, even Sir Jim Ratcliffe going in and everything with that seems to be negative.

Rangers came alive in Istanbul

“On the pitch everything is negative, even after the new manager has come in. I still think the manager will turn it around. It was a similar story to when he was at Sporting – a big club that was underperforming.

“They can’t keep getting rid of managers, Manchester United, they just can’t do it. They have thrown money at it – backed Erik ten Hag and now another manager is going to have to clear it all away. There are just so many underperforming players at Manchester United.”
