Tirso Ornelas, Brandon Lockridge keep hitting; Padres tie, lose in split-squad games – San Diego Union-Tribune

PEORIA, Ariz. — The Padres and Giants tied 1-1 on Tuesday at Peoria Stadium. The Padres also played a split-squad game against the Cubs in Mesa, Ariz., where they lost 16-1.

Batter’s box: Jackson Merrill hit a triple in his second at-bat and is 5-for-13 on the spring. … Tirso Ornelas was 1-for-2 with a walk and is batting .471 with a 1.453 OPS in 21 plate appearances this spring. … Brandon Lockridge, who like Ornelas is on the 40-man roster and is trying to make the team as an extra outfielder, was 1-for-1 with a walk and stole his third base of the spring. Lockridge began the spring with one hit in his first seven at-bats. He is 4-for-7 since. … The Padres had six hits against the Cubs, including singles by Granite Hills High School alumnus Trenton Brooks and Poway High School alum Connor Joe.

Balls and strikes: Nick Pivetta, making his first appearance in a game as a Padre, set down the final seven batters he faced in his 2⅔ innings. Pivetta struck out four and walked one. … Left-hander Wandy Peralta worked his third scoreless inning of the spring. … Jason Adam struck out two in his inning of work. He has retired all nine batters he has faced this spring. … Left-hander Adrián Morejón worked his fourth scoreless inning. … Lefty Yuki Matsui allowed a run in his inning Tuesday and has allowed two runs in four innings this spring. … Matt Waldron started against the Cubs and ran into his first trouble of the spring. After allowing one run on five hits and a walk in his first two starts, the knuckleballer surrendered two hits, walked two and yielded four runs in 2⅔ innings. … Ryan Bergert, who spent last season in Double-A, allowed his first run of the spring after throwing three scoreless innings over his first two starts. The Cubs scored once on five hits in Bergert’s two innings. … Jhony Brito, who began the spring vying for a starting job, was charged with two runs and did not record an out against the Cubs while allowing two hits and walking one.

Extra bases: Manager Mike Shildt traveled to the away game Tuesday. Bench coach Brian Esposito served as manager against the Giants. … Manny Machado has put the first pitch of an at-bat in play all five times the first pitch has been in the zone this spring, including a fly ball to the track in right-center field on Tuesday.

On deck: Right-hander Michael King, who finished seventh in National League Cy Young voting in 2024, makes his Cactus League debut Wednesday, 12:10 p.m. PT at Peoria Stadium against the Rockies.
